Sporting goods and outdoor recreation retailer Academy Sports + Outdoors has launched its holiday retail strategy for Father’s Day, introducing a "Dadmas" campaign designed to capture summer consumer demand across outdoor, sports, and lifestyle categories. The initiative couples a broad value-driven product assortment with targeted community-oriented experiential marketing events.
The strategy emerges as families prepare for seasonal activities including backyard gatherings, fishing trips, and cookouts. By positioning its inventory around experiential family moments, the retailer aims to leverage its localized merchandising strategy to connect with a broad consumer demographic ahead of the peak summer trading period.
The retailer’s seasonal inventory focus spans several core categories, balancing national brands with proprietary private labels to drive margin and maintain its value proposition. Key product lines featured in the holiday push include Magellan Outdoors fishing shirts and apparel, alongside H2OX fishing rods, reels, tackle, and outdoor gear.
The product mix also heavily features backyard entertainment and leisure merchandise, including grills, smokers, griddles, and general summer gathering essentials. Premium outdoor hardware from national brands, such as YETI coolers, drinkware, and barware, is being cross-promoted alongside technical categories, including golf equipment and PGA TOUR products, range finders, and outdoor technology gifts.
According to Matt McCabe, Executive Vice President and Chief Merchandising Officer, the merchandising objective extends beyond traditional product sales. The company’s intent is to provide products and experiences that inspire outdoor adventure and connection, whilst delivering the specific quality and price points expected by its customer base.
To support the campaign and reinforce brand loyalty, Academy has implemented a series of localized community partnerships and experiential shopping events across its retail footprint. These initiatives are designed to highlight father-child connections while driving store traffic and regional visibility.
Among the key activations, the retailer partnered with former professional quarterback Colt McCoy to host a shopping experience for 10 families. A similar corporate partnership was established with 3D Girls, Inc. to execute a Father-Daughter Field Day.
The retailer is also utilizing its new store pipeline for community engagement, hosting a local event at one of its newest locations in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Blair County. Additionally, the company collaborated with collegiate running back Justice Haynes and his father, Verron Haynes, to facilitate a dedicated shopping event for an additional 10 families.
To lower purchasing barriers during the holiday shopping period, the retailer is utilizing its established omnichannel infrastructure to offer multiple fulfillment options. Customers are being directed to digital platforms with options for buy-online-pickup-in-store (BOPIS), same-day delivery, and targeted free shipping incentives.
The campaign is also being used as a customer acquisition and retention vehicle for the retailer’s financial and loyalty ecosystems. Shoppers are incentivised to access incremental cost savings and deferred rewards through the myAcademy Rewards program and the proprietary Academy Credit Card program.
Originally established in 1938 as a family business in Texas, Academy Sports + Outdoors has expanded its retail footprint to encompass more than 300 stores operating across 21 states.
