Telangana is planning new infrastructure to strengthen its leather industry, support traditional artisans and create employment, including proposed eco-friendly tanneries in Karimnagar district expected to generate around 1,000 jobs.
Industries and IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu reviewed the proposals with officials of the Telangana Leather Industries Promotion Corporation (TGLIPC), according to media reports. The plans include a Common Facility Centre (CFC) in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, eco-friendly tanneries at Rukmapur in Karimnagar district, and plug-and-play factory complexes at Jammikunta and Armoor.
The proposed CFC will be developed on 3.5 acres in Gachibowli under a hub-and-spoke model. It is intended to help leather artisans improve product design, develop higher value products and strengthen branding, enabling them to improve marketability and reach wider customer bases.
The shared facility is expected to support traditional and small scale producers by providing access to resources that may otherwise be difficult for individual artisans to establish. The initiative also forms part of the state's broader efforts to encourage entrepreneurship, particularly among Scheduled Caste (SC) youth.
Eco-Friendly Tanneries to Create Employment
The state government is taking steps to establish eco-friendly tanneries at Rukmapur in Choppadandi mandal of Karimnagar district. According to the minister, the proposed facilities will follow international standards and are expected to generate employment for approximately 1,000 people.
The project could strengthen Telangana's leather processing infrastructure while creating job opportunities for local communities. However, further details regarding investment, processing capacity, environmental technologies and construction timelines have not yet been disclosed in the available reports.
Factory Complexes to Support Small Businesses
The government is also planning plug-and-play factory complexes at Jammikunta and Armoor. These facilities are intended to provide ready-to-use industrial spaces for businesses, potentially helping entrepreneurs establish or expand manufacturing operations with fewer infrastructure-related barriers.
Together, the proposals cover several stages of industry development, from product design and branding to leather processing and manufacturing. The focus on shared facilities and industrial spaces could help traditional artisans and emerging enterprises improve their production capabilities and business prospects.
The initiatives also reflect the state's stated objective of promoting entrepreneurship, expanding employment opportunities for young people and supporting SC entrepreneurs.
Further progress will depend on project approvals, funding arrangements and implementation schedules, details of which have not yet been announced in the available information.
