Tata International champions circular economy; launches sustainable ‘Phoenix Leather’

In a significant move toward circular manufacturing, Tata International has unveiled Phoenix Leather, a sustainable breakthrough within its premium Earthcare Leather portfolio. This launch marks a strategic shift for India’s leading leather exporter as it integrates advanced bio-chemistry with waste reduction technology to redefine industry standards.
Developed through a patented process titled Genocorium, Phoenix Leather is the result of a high-tech collaboration with the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) in Chennai. The technology functions by salvaging ‘trim waste’ —residual fibers from the leather production cycle—and reconstituting them into high-grade leather sheets. By repurposing the corium layer that is typically discarded, Tata International is effectively mitigating the environmental footprint of traditional tanning, specifically targeting the reduction of water pollution, resource depletion, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The Earthcare range, produced at the company’s massive Dewas facility which employs over 750 personnel, represents a broader commitment to green leather. Alongside Phoenix, the collection includes bio-based and metal-free alternatives that eliminate the use of chrome and aldehydes. This shift is not merely environmental but deeply commercial; P. Rajasekaran, Business Head of Finished Leather, noted that while the industry faced a post-pandemic slowdown, a robust recovery is underway. Demand is surging across the United States, China, and Europe, where brands are increasingly prioritizing ethical sourcing.
Currently, sustainable products under the Earthcare banner account for 27% of Tata International’s total production. However, the company has set an ambitious target to scale this figure to 50% within the next four years. As the global trading and distribution arm of the Tata Group, operating across 29 countries, Tata International is leveraging its expansive network to spearhead this transition toward a circular economy, positioning bio-based leather as the future of the global luxury and utility markets.
