Puma brings nitrogen-infused foam tech to performance football boots

Global sportswear manufacturer Puma has officially expanded its proprietary nitrogen-infused foam technology into the performance football sector with the launch of the Ultra Nitro 7 boot, marking a significant crossover of track-tested material science onto the football pitch.
The deployment of the technology, traditionally reserved for high-performance running footwear, was unveiled at the brand's newly opened innovation facility in Los Angeles. This facility follows previous technical showcases in Paris, Tokyo, and London, which focused on validating the compound's energy-return properties within elite running models such as the Fast-R3. The commercial introduction of the new boot precedes major international summer tournaments, where contracted professionals will debut the footwear in competitive play.
From a product engineering perspective, the Ultra Nitro 7 integrates the manufacturer's specialised foam compound directly into the sockliner and footbed. The material formulation is engineered to compress and rebound instantly upon impact, maximizing vertical and linear propulsion. To maintain strict weight parameters required by elite athletes, the total weight of the boot has been limited to 180 grams. This low mass is achieved by pairing the foam component with a lightweight woven upper and a specialized outsole designed for mechanical acceleration.
According to Romain Girard, Vice President of Innovation at Puma, the material development inside the new boot is the culmination of five years of testing and refinement with elite track athletes. Girard noted that the development processes displayed in Los Angeles extend beyond a single product line, with future design concepts driven by direct feedback from professional athletes regarding underfoot performance requirements.
The brand's commercial strategy also spans equipment and apparel. The launch showcased a broader performance ecosystem, including a new official match ball utilizing the same foam technology alongside team kits for 11 qualified nations, representing approximately one-quarter of the tournament field. Dominique Gathier, Vice President of Teamsport at Puma, confirmed that the boot will be worn on-pitch by international players, including Christian Pulisic, Diogo Dalot, and Cody Gakpo, to demonstrate the material's efficacy on the global stage.
In addition to current market entries, the manufacturer previewed its upcoming product pipeline to industry observers. This includes future footwear concepts, 3D-printed boot prototypes, and specialized thermoregulation garments designed to mitigate extreme heat exhaustion in competitive environments. The new football boot is scheduled for international pre-sale from 13 July 2026, with a general commercial release across global retail channels and digital platforms set for 23 July 2026.
