Portuguese Footwear Industry Wraps Up €60 Million BioShoes4All Project

Portugal's €60 million BioShoes4All project delivered sustainable materials, smart manufacturing technologies and innovative footwear solutions for future industry growth.

The Portuguese footwear industry has officially concluded BioShoes4All, its largest-ever collaborative project focused on sustainability, bioeconomic and industrial innovation. The four-year initiative, worth €60 million, was showcased in Felgueiras, Portugal, in the presence of the country's Minister of Economy.
Funded through Portugal's Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), the project brought together 69 partners, including footwear companies, universities, research institutes and technology centers. During its implementation, BioShoes4All generated more than 200 scientific, technological and industrial outcomes, many of which are now ready for commercial and industrial use.
One of the project's major achievements was the development of a new generation of sustainable materials. These include leather processed with plant-based extracts, chromium-free leather alternatives, bio-based polymers, composites made from cork, agricultural and marine waste, as well as innovative textiles produced from olive stones and chestnut residues. The project also developed eco-friendly footwear, lighter components and recyclable mono-material products with a lower environmental footprint.
BioShoes4All also supported the industry's digital transformation by introducing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, machine vision, Internet of Things (IoT), digital twins, smart cutting systems and advanced quality control processes. These innovations are expected to make footwear manufacturing more efficient, flexible and sustainable.
The project exceeded its original goals by completing 46 research lines, developing more than 50 low-impact products, establishing 25 industrial pilot lines, creating eight digital platforms and databases, and forming seven industrial symbiosis partnerships to promote the reuse of materials.
Speaking at the closing event, Luís Onofre, President of APICCAPS, said the project has strengthened Portugal's ability to lead the global footwear industry's transition towards sustainability and innovation. He noted that BioShoes4All has left the sector with stronger collaboration, greater technical capabilities and increased confidence for future growth.
European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis also praised the initiative, calling it a model for how innovation, sustainability and digital technologies can improve industrial competitiveness. He said the Portuguese footwear industry demonstrates that traditional manufacturing can successfully modernize while supporting Europe's long-term economic and environmental goals.
