India’s sports apparel market is gearing up for a decade of robust growth, fuelled by a structural shift toward fitness-conscious lifestyles and the mainstreaming of "athleisure" as a daily wardrobe staple. According to a report by IMARC Group, the domestic sports apparel market—valued at $300.5 million in 2025—is projected to reach $503.4 million by 2034. This represents a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.61 per cent over the forecast period.

The market is no longer confined to the playing field. The convergence of performance wear and casual fashion is driving demand for versatile garments that transition from the gym to the workplace. Retailers are moving fast to capture this trend; for instance, Bata India recently launched exclusive 'Power' brand outlets focused entirely on the athleisure segment.

Product innovation remains a key catalyst. Manufacturers are increasingly pivoting toward performance fabrics—including moisture-wicking materials and anti-microbial finishes—to cater to a consumer base that prioritizes functionality alongside style.

A surge in discretionary spending is providing the necessary tailwinds. Data from the Ministry of Statistics (MoSPI) highlights that India’s per capita Net National Income rose to Rs. 2,05,324 in FY25, up from Rs. 1,88,892 the previous year. This improved consumption capacity is particularly evident in urban centres where premiumization is becoming a dominant theme.

The "youth advantage" is another critical factor. Brands are leveraging celebrity and athlete endorsements to tap into the Gen Z demographic. A notable example is PUMA India’s multi-year partnership with badminton icon PV Sindhu, a move aimed specifically at capturing the growing interest in non-cricket sports among younger consumers.

The India sports apparel sector exhibits a diverse profile across product categories, demographics, and regional strongholds. According to the data for 2025, the market's composition reflects a mix of traditional dominance and evolving consumer behaviour.

T-shirts remain the undisputed anchor of the industry, commanding a 38.6% market share. This dominance is attributed to their dual role as both performance gear for gym-goers and affordable everyday wear. While specialized segments like track pants, tights, and sweatshirts are gaining traction due to the rising yoga culture and seasonal demand in the North, the versatility of the T-shirt ensures its position as the primary volume driver.

The market continues to lean towards male consumers, who accounted for 52.4% of total sales in 2025. This lead is underpinned by high participation rates in organized sports like cricket and football, as well as a burgeoning marathon culture among corporate professionals. However, the women’s segment is identified as a high-growth area, supported by a surge in female-centric fitness initiatives and expanded product lines from global brands.

While e-commerce is the fastest-growing channel—leveraging deep penetration into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities—physical retail continues to hold the lion's share (68.9 per cent) of the market. Global giants are reinforcing their "brick-and-mortar" presence to offer tactile brand experiences. ASICS recently inaugurated its largest Indian flagship store in Delhi’s Connaught Place, while Nike expanded its footprint in Mumbai with a high-profile outlet at Oberoi Sky City Mall. These investments suggest that for high-performance gear, the "touch-and-feel" aspect of shopping remains indispensable for the Indian consumer.

North India remains the primary revenue driver, accounting for over a third of the market. This is attributed to a strong sports culture in states like Haryana and Punjab, coupled with high disposable incomes in the Delhi-NCR belt. However, South and West India are emerging as high-growth pockets, driven by the burgeoning running and cycling communities in tech hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai.

As India’s e-commerce market is set to touch Rs. 29.88 lakh crore by 2030, the accessibility of global labels will only increase. Combined with government initiatives to boost sports infrastructure and a nationwide push for healthier living, the sports apparel sector is positioned as one of the most resilient segments within India’s broader retail landscape.
