India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have stepped up efforts to conclude the review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA), with negotiators directed to expedite work on the remaining chapters of the pact.
The decision was taken during the 13th meeting of the AITIGA Joint Committee, held in New Delhi from July 6–10. Officials agreed to accelerate negotiations to modernize the trade agreement, improve market access and facilitate stronger trade and investment flows between India and the 10-member ASEAN bloc.
The review focuses on simplifying customs procedures, updating rules of origin, removing non-tariff barriers and making the agreement more business-friendly. The Joint Committee instructed its sub-committees to finalize outstanding chapters within agreed timelines, signaling renewed momentum in the negotiations.
A modernized AITIGA is expected to strengthen regional supply chains, enhance economic integration and create new opportunities for exporters across sectors, including leather, footwear, textiles, engineering goods and agriculture. The agreement is also expected to improve the overall ease of doing business between India and ASEAN member
states.
ASEAN remains one of India's largest trading partners, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$128 billion in 2025–26. Both sides view the review as a key step toward making the agreement more balanced, efficient and aligned with current global trade practices.
