CSIR-CLRI Takes Cleaner, Cost-Efficient Leather Technologies to Tamil Nadu Clusters

Leather manufacturers are under increasing pressure to produce more efficiently while reducing environmental impact, managing waste and meeting tougher sustainability requirements from global markets. Against this backdrop, CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute (CSIR-CLRI) has taken its technical expertise directly to major leather clusters in Tamil Nadu.
The institute recently conducted an outreach program across Ranipet, Ambur, Vaniyambadi, Pernambut and Pallavaram, focusing on cleaner production, chemical cost reduction, waste utilization and improved environmental performance.
Organized by the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) Southern Region, the program brought together tanners and industry associations to discuss practical technologies that can be applied at the production level.
Across the leather clusters of Ranipet, Ambur, Vaniyambadi and Pernambut, CSIR-CLRI experts discussed cleaner processing options, better utilization of solid tannery waste and ways to reduce chemical consumption.
The discussions also focused on how the industry can continue to grow while managing its environmental impact. These areas are becoming increasingly important as international buyers place greater emphasis on sustainable production, resource efficiency and responsible manufacturing.
The technical sessions were led by Dr. P. Thanikaivelan, Director, CSIR-CLRI, along with senior scientists. Abdul Wahab, Regional Chairman (South), CLE, highlighted the region’s production and export performance and drew attention to upcoming Leather Working Group (LWG) audit requirements.
For tanneries, cleaner technology has a direct business angle. Reducing chemical consumption, improving resource efficiency and better waste utilization can help control production costs while meeting international customer expectations.
The program reflects the growing need to connect research and technology with the practical challenges faced by leather manufacturers and strengthen the industry’s competitiveness in global markets.
