CSIR-CLRI Presents Decarbonisation Roadmap for Kanpur Leather

The CSIR–Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) Regional Centre, Kanpur, participated in a stakeholder consultation on Carbon Footprint Mitigation Strategy and Roadmap for the Kanpur Leather Cluster on August 4, 2026. The program was organized by Green Tree Global at Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU), Kanpur.


The consultation brought together representatives from the leather industry, government agencies, financial institutions, technical experts and academia to discuss ways to reduce carbon emissions and make the Kanpur leather cluster more sustainable and globally competitive.


During the event, the Scientist in Charge of CSIR-CLRI Regional Centre, Kanpur, Shri Abhinandan Kumar delivered a presentation on "Decarbonization Strategies for the Leather Industry."  


The presentation explained practical measures that leather manufacturers can adopt, including energy efficient technologies, cleaner production processes, renewable energy, better resource management and environmentally responsible manufacturing practices.


According to Dr. C.S. Azad, representative of Green Tree Global, the objective of the program is to prepare a practical roadmap for reducing the carbon footprint of the Kanpur leather cluster while helping industries meet global environmental standards.


 Experts also noted that improving energy efficiency in tanneries and leather product manufacturing units can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.


The consultation provided a platform for participants to exchange ideas and discuss a comprehensive carbon footprint mitigation roadmap for one of India's largest leather manufacturing clusters. Suggestions from industry representatives, technical experts and financial institutions will be considered before finalizing the roadmap.


CSIR-CLRI said it will continue supporting the leather industry through research, technology and sustainable manufacturing practices to help Indian leather companies improve their environmental performance and strengthen their global competitiveness.
