Biotech venture unveils luxury handbag crafted from lab-grown dinosaur leather

In a fusion of paleontology and haute couture, a consortium of biotechnologists and designers has unveiled the world’s first luxury accessory crafted from lab-grown T-Rex Leather. The one-of-a-kind handbag, designed by the avant-garde technical label Enfin Levé, made its debut at Amsterdam’s Art Zoo Museum. Displayed alongside a colossal cast of a Tyrannosaurus rex, the item represents a significant milestone in the rapidly evolving field of cellular agriculture and bio-fabricated luxury.


The project is the result of a multi-year collaboration between creative agency VML (a unit of WPP PLC), genomic specialists The Organoid Company, and Lab-Grown Leather Ltd., a subsidiary of the London-listed BSF Enterprise PLC.

While the concept may evoke the speculative science of Jurassic Park, the underlying technology is firmly rooted in modern genomic engineering. To create the material, scientists used computational biology and AI modelling to reconstruct collagen sequences from fossilised dinosaur remains. This synthetic DNA was then cultivated using proprietary tissue engineering platforms to grow a material that is structurally identical to traditional hides, but produced without animal slaughter or the environmental toll of deforestation.

Michal Hadas, founder of Enfin Levé, was tasked with transforming the biomaterial into a functional luxury piece. Known for ‘techwear’ that bridges artisanal craftsmanship with progressive textiles, Hadas’s design seeks to prove that prehistoric biology can meet the rigorous standards of high-end fashion.

"The future of luxury does not need to rely on the traditional leather industry’s heavy environmental footprint," said a spokesperson for the collaboration.

The lab-grown process bypasses the chromium-heavy tanning common in traditional manufacturing, offering a biodegradable and fully traceable alternative. The move comes as the luxury sector faces mounting pressure from investors and consumers to improve sustainability credentials. Traditional leather production remains a primary driver of cattle ranching, which is frequently linked to habitat loss in sensitive ecosystems.

The handbag will remain on exhibition at the Art Zoo for six weeks before being auctioned to a private collector. However, the partners confirmed that T-Rex Leather™ will not remain a museum curiosity. Lab-Grown Leather Ltd. intends to make the material commercially available to luxury houses, with initial applications focusing on high-end accessories before expanding into the automotive and performance apparel sectors.



By looking back 68 million years to the resilience of prehistoric biology, the venture aims to provide a blueprint for the next generation of climate-resilient, high-performance materials.
