Bihar looks to Tamil Nadu for blueprint to become industrial hub

 A delegation from the Bihar government has completed a fact-finding mission to Tamil Nadu as part of a renewed push to transform the state into a national hub for the textile and leather sectors.

The visit, led by officials from the Department of Industries, focused on studying the manufacturing models of Tiruppur and Ranipet—regions that have gained global recognition for their industrial scale and environmental standards. During the tour of Tiruppur’s textile cluster, officials met with industry experts to examine the advanced technologies and sustainable manufacturing processes that have underpinned the area's economic growth.

Alok Ranjan Ghosh, Bihar’s Director of Industries, said the visit provided the necessary insights to replicate these successful industrial models. He added that the state intended to create a ‘conducive environment’ through enhanced infrastructure and policy incentives, with the ultimate goal of generating large-scale local employment.

A significant portion of the mission was dedicated to environmental sustainability. In Ranipet, the delegation inspected a ‘Zero Liquid Discharge’ (ZLD) plant to understand the treatment of tannery wastewater. The facility, which recycles 85% of its water for reuse, is being viewed as a potential blueprint for Bihar’s emerging leather industry as the state looks to adopt "green" industrial practices.

In Chennai, discussions were held with the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) to promote Bihar as an attractive destination for external investment. The state is currently marketing its ‘plug-and-play’ infrastructure to potential investors, allowing companies to begin operations with minimal delay.

As part of this strategy, the Bihar Industrial Area Development Authority (BIADA) recently allocated 72,000 square feet of industrial space in Patna’s Bihta area to R K Industries, a long-standing garment manufacturer that supplies several premium global brands. This move is seen as a key step in the government's broader multi-pronged strategy to modernise Bihar's industrial landscape through infrastructure upgrades and industry-friendly legislation.
