BASF's low-carbon polymers for Asia’s footwear & apparel giants

The global chemical producer BASF has launched a new portfolio of low-carbon materials targeted at consumer goods manufacturers in the Asia Pacific region. The introduction of the Reduced Product Carbon Footprint Elastollan Thermoplastic Polyurethane grades provides a fresh option for the footwear, sports, leisure, and textile apparel industries as they navigate mounting pressure to meet environmental sustainability targets.
The performance of these newly introduced materials is technically identical to existing standard grades. According to the manufacturer, the mechanical properties have been maintained while the product carbon footprint has been reduced by 10 to 30 percent compared to standard versions. This baseline reduction is achieved through lower-emission utilities, such as renewable electricity or steam, and the use of alternative fossil feedstocks.
For manufacturers of footwear, apparel, and technical textiles, the availability of these identical-performance materials eliminates the need for expensive re-engineering or modifications to existing production lines. Synthetic components, outsoles, and performance coatings can transition to lower-carbon materials without affecting the durability or flexibility expected by consumers.
The calculation of the carbon footprint reduction complies with internationally recognized standards, specifically the Together for Sustainability guideline and ISO 14067 requirements. This alignment provides brand owners with verifiable data to support their corporate environmental disclosures and product labelling.
Furthermore, parts of the portfolio manufactured at the production hub in Shanghai can incorporate mass-balanced biomethane, offering an additional mechanism to lower environmental impact. Production is centered in Shanghai to establish shorter regional supply chains. This localized approach is intended to provide closer technical support and greater security of supply for footwear and textile brands operating across Asia Pacific markets.
